Vesuvius last erupted in 1944. I believe that over 2000 people were killed in the Eruption.
If you mean a cataclysmic eruption. The last cataclysmic eruption was in 79; that was the eruption that buried Heracleum and Pompeii. These sort of cataclysmic eruptions are called Plinian after the Roman writer Pliny the younger who described the eruption.
